Even sitting quietly often entails carving little animals or other things to keep his hands and mind occupied. He is as comfortable in a crowd as he is alone as long as there is something to keep him focused, but boredom often gets him into trouble.
Skill Set: Ancient Runes, Animagus, Native American lore and rites, Defense and combat magic
History: Adriel Chee was born to Winona Chee, a native american woman, and David Pennington, an English archeologist. While his parents were half bloods, he would be considered a pureblood if you only count three generations back. On his mother's side, he descends from a long line of shamans with his grandfather being the current one for the tribe, but his tribe didn't really differentiate magical from non-magical within themselves so he didn't really learn about blood status until later in his childhood. His great grandmother on his mother's side would have been considered a 'no-maj' by US standards, though not by tribal standards, and one set of grandparents on his father's side were 'muggleborns.'
His parents were never married. His father was not a man to settle down, always on the move and searching for the next global project and his mother had acted as a guide to an ancient site for his father in the deserts of New Mexico. They had fallen in love quickly, and fell out of it almost as fast, but they had an amicable but long distance friendship that continued until his father's unexpected death from a robbery in Africa when Adriel was in his early 20s.
Though his birth was unexpected, both parents raised him in turns. Adriel learned the ways of the Navajo during the most of the year he was with his mother, and he travelled the world with his father in the summer months where he was taught ancient runes and odd tidbits of random lore. Because of that, he turned down the letter he got from Ilvermorny and opted to learn the more traditional magics of the Navajo along with the magics his father also taught him which mostly consisted of how to defend himself and fight off dark wizards or creatures.
Both educations overlapped where it came to traps - Native American hunting trips and traps in archeological sites that needed to be set to keep away magical and mundane robbers and the ones that had to watched out for that were set by the ancient people. Creatures were another one, as the world is filled with dangerous things when you often live in wilder areas. Adriel had to learn these through experience, and because of that, he has almost a sixth sense when it comes to danger from malevolent sources and things that might feel out of place.
While he had friends on the reservation, between the fact that his mother never married and only had a half Navajo son and him being gone during the summer months meant he didn't have any close friends. He did meet a couple other kids while with his father, but they were only ever around at certain archeological sites and often weren't in his age group. So though he is very friendly, he has never really been close to anyone outside of family. It was also during a dig in Egypt at the age of 12 when he learned the meaning of terms halfblood, mudblood, and pureblood, and he tends to look down on anyone that uses those terms to identify others. He hates discrimination of all kind because of the way the tribes are treated in America even by MACUSA and believes people should only be judged by their personality and skills.
His unorthodox education meant he started a lot of magic young, but he also lacks in a lot of magical subjects. He did achieve a G.E.D. in muggle subjects and went to trade school to learn accounting, but he never finished it because he could not sit still at a desk for long. Since he had dropped out, the tribal grant that would have paid for it was withdrawn, and he spent a couple years paying off the expense doing random jobs and selling hand made carvings and trinkets at fairs.
He jumped from small job to small job to make ends meet until his father's death when he was 23. It was on an expedition to an ancient magical temple in the Congos, and he could have gone, but he had skipped out on it because he had started dating a hispanic woman. He broke up with his girlfriend and blamed himself for his father's death for months until his grandfather took him to a cave for a conversation and a ritual that allowed him to commune with his father's spirit. When he emerged from it, it was with a new resolution to change his life and do something with it other than the minimum needed to survive and have fun.
He started by going to MACUSA to sit for tests, and got a mastery in runes as well as defense. He also passed his newts for care of magical creatures, but barely scraped a passing owl in potions and history. He did score well in the practical for owl transfiguration, but didn't try for the newts on it since he had very little knowledge on the theory and his father had not taught him much wand work above owls. He did register his animagus form from his native American training though it wasn't required because of his tribal status - a chestnut colored mustang which was the sign of a warrior in a tribe.
Once he got his scores, he applied to Gringotts for curse breaking or warding, but was denied due to a lack of arithmancy scores. He didn't have the funds to hire a tutor, so he started offering up his service as a guide or trail breaker for hunters, explorers, and archeologists for both muggle and magical people alike. He found he enjoyed the job, and would even tell stories of creatures like the skin walkers even though speaking of them was taboo because the reactions were often amusing. However, he refused to tell tribal folk stories and the like to any historian no matter the pay offered since they were not of the tribe.
It took a few years, but by the age of 30 he had built up a reputation of being a trustworthy and knowledgeable guide. He had saved a few parties from magical creatures using either his wand or his knowledge of the local fauna. He often surprised his clients with how much he also knew of other countries, and was eventually invited to other expeditions because of his experience. He gladly accepted those and found himself starting to do the same type of jobs his father once did, and when they found out he was Pennington's son, he was invited into more circles as the prodigal child that older veterans in the field recalled.
With the extra income he received, he was able to send money back to his tribe to help improve their living condition, and he was able to purchase books on arithmancy. Unfortunately, he kept hitting walls with the latter since it was an odd mix of divination, astronomy, and maths, and while he was familiar with the last, he was not familiar with the first two in the non-tribal setting. He's currently debating on hiring a tutor for it or to just get more hands on experience in either curse breaking or warding that Gringotts would not be able to ignore.
Special Items/ Equipment (if any): A 'medicine bag' around his neck that contains materials for native American rituals (peyote, tobacco, pipes, blood, fur, and feathers of various animals and birds, oils, beads, sand, and stones.) It also contains ropes, twine, various pieces of raw wood and wood carvings, chalk sticks, a journal, clothes, craft items, and a saddle and bridle that can be enlarged to fit his horse form for a rider.
Other: Hobbies include carving, making dream catchers and other magical native American artifacts, collecting local legends of places he visits, and sketching up new or interesting types of traps. He does smoke, though only socially, and is bisexual though he keeps his sexuality to himself around most because of the prejudice of the time period.
Animagus form - Wild Spanish Mustang
In his horse form, he stands at 17 hands tall. The height is is identifying mark as wild mustangs usually stand at 14-15 hands tall. He learned how to transform by the winter of his 15th year, but didn't complete his tribe's requirements until the the spring after turning 16.
As part of his training, he had to stay with a wild herd for a season both to prove he could retain his mind, and to learn the ways of Horse. While the herd did not like him in the beginning while he was still Man, they slowly accepted him among then during the spring he stayed with them. He loved that time period since it was simple, and he learned how to battle as a horse when predators came around. By the time he left, he was one of the herd, and he still goes to visit when he has several weeks of downtime just to be Horse.
